First Match At The Riverside Stadium
Official Programme
Saturday, August 26th, 1995 saw the opening of the Cellnet Riverside Stadium. Just 10 months earlier, the area where the ground now stands was being cleared in preparation for building work. Taylor Woodrow were the main contractors, given the job to build the £16 million stadium.
The first match should have been a midweek game, but Boro needed more time to finish the ground, and to gain safety certificates. So, on the last Saturday in August 1995, Nigel Pearson led out the first Boro team to play on the new turf against Chelsea. Craig Hignett was the first player to score, and Jan-Aage Fjortoft scored another to give Boro a 2 - 0 victory on their special day.
