BoroBarmy.com Special Report

TERRY VENABLES agreed to join Boro as Head Coach until the end of the season. Bryan Robson will remain as manager, but it is believed that Venables will have the final say on team selection. He has admitted that it is not going to be easy, saying: "It's going to be a tough job for everyone at the club. It's a big challenge and it's one we have to get stuck into. The first priority is to sort out the position. I don't know whether I can help, but let's give it one big shot."

Terry Venables & Bryan Robson, pictured coaching England in 1996Speaking about the deal, Bryan Robson said: "Terry will come in with a few fresh ideas and hopefully this will be the lift that everyone needs. He has had a terrific career as manager. He gets respect from the players and they respond to him which is what this club needs." However, Robson was hoping that the deal would have been on a long-term basis. "That can't happen, so we'd sooner have six months than none at all."

It is thought that Boro Chairman Steve Gibson agreed on the compromise when the original deal fell through last week. Boro had wanted Venables as manager, with Robson taking over as first team coach, but media contracts prevented this from happening. Gibson said: "His reputation as a coach is well known. It's a big step forward for the Club. We're going to cherish the challenge."

Middlesbrough FC consequently avoided relegation.
